Once your baby is born, your body starts a new job — healing itself and feeding your little one. Both take energy, rest, and the right food.
At Maternite Hospital, we often tell families: “Delivery ke baad maa ke liye khana dawaihota hai.” And that’s not just a saying. What a new mother eats in those 40 days plays a huge role in how well she recovers — and how well she’s able to breastfeed.
So here’s a list of tried-and-tested Indian foods — especially from Rajasthan — that help recovery, improve strength, and support lactation. No fancy diets. Just warm, healing food made the way our mothers and grandmothers used to.
Let’s start with the classic.
Made from gond (edible gum), whole wheat flour, ghee, dry fruits, and sometimes ajwain — these laddoos are rich in calcium and iron. They give energy, strengthen bones, and support milk production. One in the morning, one in the evening — perfect.
Yes, ghee. Don’t fear it. If you’re using homemade or cow ghee, it helps with digestion, joint strength, and overall healing. We always advise our moms to drizzle a little on hot roti or in dal — especially during the first 2 weeks after delivery.
These are simple but powerful. Boil 1 spoon of saunf or methi seeds in water, cool it slightly, and sip throughout the day. Helps with digestion, reduces gas, and improves milk flow.
Ajwain water is also great for cleaning the uterus post-delivery and easing postnatal cramps.
After delivery, your stomach is sensitive. So are your joints and digestion. Start with foods like:
Avoid maida, deep fried snacks, and cold drinks — they slow healing and cause bloating.
Warm milk with turmeric or almond powder strengthens immunity and supports lactation. Adding 2-3 soaked almonds, a pinch of haldi, and a few strands of saffron is a wonderful bedtime drink.
If your mother or mother-in-law is preparing traditional mixes like panjiri, jeera-laddoo, or harira — go for it. These are nutrient-rich, and if made with clean ingredients and love — they do more good than any supplement.
Your body needs:
If your milk supply feels low, don’t stress. Sometimes it's about rest. Sometimes it's hormones. At Maternite, our doctors and lactation counselors guide you on both food and feeding posture — because both matter.
Whether you had a normal delivery or C-section, the food you eat will affect your strength, mood, and how quickly you feel “normal” again.
We follow up with every mom, not just to check stitches, but to check energy levels, appetite, and emotional health. That’s why Maternite is trusted as a complete women care hospital in Jaipur, not just a delivery center.
