If you’re a new parent, every sneeze, every little rash, every warm forehead can send your heart racing.
And honestly? That’s okay. It just means you care.

At Maternite Hospital, we always tell parents — “Small problems are normal. Knowing which ones need action is what matters.”

Here’s a straight, no-panic guide to common baby issues — what to do at home, and when to pick up the phone.

Fevers

What’s normal:

Mild fevers (up to 100.4°F or 38°C) are often just your baby’s body responding to something — a vaccine, a cold, or even teething.

What you can do:

  • Give a sponge bath with lukewarm water
  • Keep your baby in light clothes
  • Continue feeding as usual — hydration helps
  • Monitor temperature every few hours

Call the doctor if:

  • Baby is under 3 months and has a fever
  • Temperature crosses 100.4°F
  • Baby is unusually sleepy, irritable, or not feeding well
  • There’s vomiting, rash, or convulsions

Our pediatric doctors in Jaipur at Maternite take these calls every day — no worry is ever too small.

Coughs, Colds & Blocked Nose

Common? Yes. Dangerous? Rarely. Most colds go away in 5–7 days.

At-home relief:

  • Use saline nasal drops and gentle suction (if baby is too congested)
  • Steam in the room (not direct) can ease breathing
  • Keep baby upright while feeding
  • Feed more often — they tire quickly

Call us if:

  • Breathing looks laboured (fast chest movements)
  • Lips or fingers look bluish
  • Cough is persistent or sounds tight
  • Baby refuses feeds

We often keep babies under observation in our NICU hospital in Jaipur if symptoms don’t settle — but most clear up with simple care.

Diaper Rashes

Almost every baby gets this at some point — especially during hot, humid days or teething.

What helps:

  • Change diapers frequently
  • Leave baby diaper-free for 20–30 mins a day
  • Wash with plain water, not wipes (for a few days)
  • Use a thick layer of diaper cream or coconut oil

Call the doctor if:

  • Rash spreads, blisters, or bleeds
  • Baby cries in pain during cleaning
  • No improvement in 3–4 days

Sometimes fungal rashes need medical cream — don’t guess.

 Loose Motions or Constipation

Newborn poop patterns are confusing.
Some poop 10 times a day. Some once in 3 days. What matters is how baby is behaving.

Constipation signs: Hard, dry stool. Crying while pooping.
Loose motions: Very frequent, watery stools — more than 7–8 a day.

At home:

  • Continue breastfeeding
  • Avoid overfeeding formula
  • No medicine without doctor advice

Call us if:

  • Poop is green and frothy, or has blood
  • Baby looks dehydrated
  • Baby has sunken eyes or dry mouth
