At Maternite Hospital, we see it all the time: a new parent holding their baby like glass, eyes wide, asking quietly,
"Doctor… pakadne ka sahi tareeka kya hai?"

It’s normal. Babies are tiny, unpredictable, and don’t come with an instruction manual. But with a little practice — and the right guidance — caring for a newborn becomes second nature.

So here’s a practical, no-pressure guide to handling, bathing, and diapering your baby safely and gently.

1. Handling a Newborn – Start with Support

  • Always support the baby’s head and neck. Their muscles aren’t strong yet.
  • Use both hands while lifting. One hand under the head, the other under the bottom.
  • Hold the baby close to your chest — it helps them feel secure.
  • Don’t shake the baby — not to wake them, not even in play.

Wash your hands before every feed or cuddle. Newborns have a sensitive immune system.

2. Bathing – Less Is More

In the first 2 weeks, stick to a sponge bath.

  • Use a soft towel, lukewarm water, and mild baby soap.
  • Don’t bathe daily — 2–3 times a week is enough.
  • Wait until the umbilical cord stump falls off and heals.

What helps:

  • Choose a time when your baby is calm — not too hungry or sleepy.
  • Keep everything ready: towel, clean clothes, diaper.
  • Use your elbow to test water temperature — it should feel warm, not hot.

In Jaipur’s cooler months, ensure the room is warm before bathing. Wrap the baby immediately after.

3. Diapering – Simple, but Important

  • Change diapers every 2–3 hours or when wet/soiled.
  • Clean gently with plain water or unscented wipes.

Pat dry — don’t rub. And let the skin breathe for a few minutes before putting on a fresh diaper.

Prevent rashes by:

  • Applying a thin layer of diaper cream or coconut oil
  • Avoiding tight diapers
  • Checking for fit as your baby grows

If rash persists or skin seems red and inflamed, consult your child specialist or pediatrichospital in Jaipur right away.

Bonus: Don’t Stress About "Perfect"

Some days your baby will cry a lot. Some days you’ll feel unsure.
That doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong.
We always tell new parents: “Babies just need to feel safe, warm, fed, and loved. Everything else comes with time.”

And at Maternite, we’re just a call away if you feel unsure — whether it’s a feeding issue, diaper rash, or something small that’s bothering you.
